Future Political Predictions

The NY Times Charles Blow runs an interesting blog called “By the Numbers”. In it he sifts through various polls and surveys to try and get a picture of trends within our country. Today’s editorial features his view of the future of GOP. He thinks they’re in for some trouble. He attributes the rise of the Tea Party as the “desperate thrashings of a dying movement”.

It’s about fear-fueled anger. But anger is not an idea. It’s not a plan. And it’s not a vision for the future. It is, however, the second stage of grief, right after denial and before bargaining.

The right is on the wrong side of history. The demographics of the country are rapidly changing, young people are becoming increasingly liberal on social issues, and rigid, dogmatic religious stricture is loosening its grip on the throat of our culture.

The right has seen the enemy, and he is the future.

This jives with my experience. My friends and family – even those who identify with the Republican Party – definitely lean moderate. A party the doesn’t make room for its moderate members is going to be in trouble.
